A Parent's Perspective on Calisthenics

Published Tue 02 Jun 2020

I am so grateful we discovered Calisthenics for my daughter.  At the age of 5, my daughter lacked confidence and was often overwhelmed in public speaking situations.

My daughter had a close friend who had grown up with Calisthenics, and I remember her attending a fun introduction to Calisthenics at the annual club disco. The inclusion into her new tribe was heartwarming.

Within six months of not being able to do a school show 'n' tell she was volunteering to speak at the school assembly. Calisthenics taught her to make smart choices, care for her health and well being alongside a fitness regimen. It taught her to be organised, self-reliant, to step outside her comfort zone and never give up.  Cali involves memorising routines, taking instruction, listening to coaches and incredible self-discipline.

I was a full time working mum and getting my daughter to extracurricular activities after school was challenging. The program of Saturday training with "self-training" in-between is fabulous for working parents.

Calisthenics has taught my daughter what it means to put her "show face" on and to pick herself up from disappointment.  Participating and being fully engaged is more important than placing 1st or 2nd. Resilience is hard to teach our daughters,  but Calisthenics is a journey, not a race.

The first time  I saw my daughter on stage was a moment etched in my mind forever. The fact she was determined not to let her team or coach down and give it a go ...is a life lesson that keeps on giving.

Developing friendship groups outside of the classroom are so important for our daughters.  Even her school was incredibly encouraging of maintaining a club sport outside of school as it provides balance and extension to community life.

My daughter's fitness through Calisthenics delivers incredible results even at her school sports competition days. The maintenance of her core strength has held her in good step.

My daughter has developed lifelong friendships with her teammates, but also the love and admiration for her coach is something that she will carry forward forever.

This level of engagement extends to parents who are also welcomed into this caring club community. My daughter is proud to be a member of this relatively new dance sport to Qld and loves introducing her friends to her favourite pastime.

From a corporate sponsor perspective, we choose to support this predominantly female sport because it encourages diversity, healthy competition, mental fitness and confidence. Often feelings of anxiety and fear of failure can be exacerbated working in male-dominated industries. Calisthenics is a sport delivering on underlining life long skills to support women in their future endeavours.  In addition, when we see the devotion and investment of time by coaches instilling a love of sport and all it represents into our future workforce - it is our corporate social responsibility to support our local Qld clubs.
